Using Archives in Theatre and Performance Research (by Dorota Sosnowska, 6-7 March)

In the first part of her course, Dorota Sosnowska is going to introduce the term ‘black space’ used by American artist Theaster Gates in reference to places abandoned by their inhabitants due to process of gentrification. The site-specific work Traumagutstrasse produced by Polish artist Robert Kuśmirowski will be compared with that of Gates. In the second part, she will tell a story of the production of Brygada szlifierza Karhana (1949) by a Czech author Vasko Kania depicting workers’ struggle in the tractors’ factory. It was produced in New Theatre in Łódź by a group of young, leftist actors who believed in political efficacy of theatre and wanted it to become a tool of establishing new, better social order.

Dorota Sosnowska (1982) is an Assistant Professor in the Section for Theatre and Performance, and a cultural theorist interested in theatre and performance. Between 2006 and 2008 she was a member of Culture Animation specialization team. Her dissertation reflected on the history of Polish theatre in the 20th century, especially between 1945 and 1989. Currently, her academic work is devoted to issues of source, archive, documentation and media in theatre and performance studies.
