Guest lecturer course: Peter W. Marx

Anotace přednášek:

The "long nineteenth century" has long been marginalized by a form of theatre historiography that focused on the achievements and innovations of Modernism. In contrast to such an approach, I will suggest a reading of the period that neither follows the master-narrative of the nation state and its homogeneous culture, nor will focus on aesthetic processes alone. Instead, I suggest a polyphonic history of the nineteenth century that describes formative processes and political interpretations as the framing conditions of this period.

Four lecture will focus on different case studies from history of theatre in 19th century, discussing especially methodological issues. The issues will be presented in series of four lectures:

  • 15th of May (Wednesday) 17.00 - Cartographing the Long Nineteenth Century
  • 16th of May (Thursday) 12.00 - Technology, Commodification, Mediatization, and Metropolitan Culture
  • 17th of May (Friday) - 10.00 Marginalized protagonists and groups in the theatrical landscape of the long nineteenth century
  • 14.00 Max Reinhardt: From bourgeois Theatre to Metropolitan Culture.
